The Utah Jazz have a shot to make another statement when they square off against the San Antonio Spurs for the second time in four days.
The 4-1 Spurs haven’t played since falling to Utah 106-91 Tuesday night in San Antonio.
While keeping the bench in check in the first matchup was key, the play from starting Rudy Gobert against Pau Gasol was huge. Gobert held Gasol to just eight points on 4-for-9 shooting with eight rebounds in 27 minutes
Gobert will need to have another solid day against Gasol if the Jazz are to repeat their winning ways from Tuesday night.
Gasol is one of the most gifted scoring big men in the league. He can face up and knock down the outside jumper or get deep post position for easy baskets.
While Gasol has had the scoring edge between the two in four career meetings, it is Gobert who has the 3-0 advantage in wins when he plays more than 15 minutes, according to Basketball-reference.com.
In the three Jazz wins, Gobert has a 38-22 rebounding edge while holding Gasol to just 13.3 points per game. That is 4.9 points below his career average of 18.2 points a game.
If Gobert can continue to keep Gasol off the glass and keep his otherwise potent offensive game in check, the Jazz will have a good shot at knocking off the Spurs for the second time in less than a week.
